I choose to highlight this book because it has just the right balance of Chinese legend and modern-day story for school-aged readers. Chinese culture and traditions are learned through this sweet fictional account of a girl and her parents preparing for the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. The illustrations are peaceful, meaningful, and beautiful … just like the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival!

Thanking the Moon_6308.jpg

Created by one of my most favorite authors and illustrators, Grace Lin’s Thanking the Moon celebrates the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival through its simple text and intentional use of cultural details in the illustrations. The special customs of the cultural festival are touched on in this short book for a younger audience. A complete description of the significance and cultural importance of the Mid-Autumn Festival is detailed in the back of the book.

A Big Mooncake.jpg

Although also by Grace Lin, this book is quite different from Thanking the Moon in that it is not specifically teaching about the Mid-Autumn Moon Festival. Instead, it presents an imaginative take on the traditional “mooncake.” The nighttime illustrations are soft and warm and the heart-warming text and anticipation of the story provide a rich read-aloud experience.

We continue to receive fantastic feedback for your storytimes - the parents are impressed with the educational quality, kids love how fun they are, and everyone walks out happy.

"If I had young ones, I would definitely be taking them to these story times with my talented friend Jen! Co-teaching with her in my 2nd grade classroom, I got to see first hand her engaging read alouds."
-Dawn Puroway, Educator and Parent
